Where to stay near Universal Studios Hollywood, with a group.
The closest beds to Universal Studios Hollywood are the hotels on the hill right next to the park in Universal City. Toluca Lake, Studio City and North Hollywood are the next-closest neighborhoods, with Burbank and Sherman Oaks a short drive further. For a group of 8 to 10, a whole house is often easier than three or four hotel rooms: Vista Villa is a 4-bedroom vacation rental in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles, about 10 minutes by car from the park (15 to 18 in typical traffic), that sleeps up to 10 including children.

House or hotel for 8 to 10 people?
For a family or a group of 8 to 10, one house usually beats three or four hotel rooms. Here's what Vista Villa gives a group:

Universal Studios Hollywood doesn't have on-site resort hotels the way Universal Orlando does. The closest options are the hotels on the hill right beside the park in Universal City; check each hotel's official site for its walking route or shuttle. Toluca Lake, Studio City, North Hollywood, Burbank and Sherman Oaks are all a short drive or rideshare away.
Is it better to stay in an Airbnb or a hotel in LA?
It depends on the group. A hotel is simpler for a couple or a short trip: daily housekeeping, a front desk and sometimes a walk to the sights. A whole-house vacation rental makes more sense for families and groups of 6 to 10: bedrooms and living space together, a full kitchen, laundry and parking at the house. Sherman Oaks or Studio City: which is better for Universal Studios Hollywood?
Studio City is a little closer to the park, and its stretch of Ventura Boulevard is walkable. Sherman Oaks is a few minutes further west, about 10 minutes from Universal Studios Hollywood when the roads are clear (15 to 18 in typical traffic), with hillside homes above Ventura Blvd and quick access to the 101 and the 405 for UCLA, the Getty Center and the beaches.
