For a family trip to Los Angeles, a whole house in a quiet Valley neighborhood keeps naps, meals and bedtimes simple. Where to stay in LA with kids.
Los Angeles is spread out, so the right base depends on what the trip is for.
Santa Monica
The beach, the pier and the bike path on your doorstep, but busier streets, and Universal Studios Hollywood is about 35 minutes away without traffic. Best for beach-first trips.
Anaheim (Disneyland)
Best when Disneyland is the whole trip. The rest of LA is a long drive: Universal Studios Hollywood is about an hour away without traffic.
Hollywood
Central for the Walk of Fame and Griffith Observatory, and about 15 minutes to Universal, but busy, crowded streets around the main sights.
The Valley (Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Burbank)
Quieter residential streets, more houses with pools and parking, and the studios close by. From Vista Villa: Universal about 10 minutes, Warner Bros. about 15, the Getty Center about 25 and Santa Monica about 30 without traffic.

Why a whole house works for families.
Up to 10 guests including children, in one house instead of connecting hotel rooms:
- Four bedrooms, all upstairs, with beds for 8: the twin room works as the kids' room, and the queen room's blackout drapes help with naps and jet lag.
- Two living rooms, so the kids' movie and the grown-ups' conversation don't compete: a 75″ TV with PS5 and Xbox in one, a fireplace and board games in the other.
- A full kitchen with cookware for ten, a glass breakfast nook for four, and a washer and dryer.
- A 2-car garage with a free EV charger, so car seats stay in the car.
Pool safety with children.
The private saltwater pool is 3 to 6 ft deep, with shallow steps at one end, no lifeguard and no heating. An adult supervises children at all times, with no diving and no glass in the pool area. There's no crib at the house, so bring a travel crib for babies.

Vista Villa is on a quiet residential hillside street above Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks, Los Angeles. We don't rank neighborhoods or make safety promises. - Universal Studios Hollywood, about 10 minutes by car (check ride height requirements on Universal's official site).
- Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood, about 15 minutes by car in Burbank (check the tour's age guidance before you book).
- Sherman Oaks Castle Park: mini-golf and an arcade in Sherman Oaks.
- Griffith Observatory, about 30 minutes by car, for city and Hollywood Sign views (parking fills on weekends and evenings).
- Santa Monica and Venice Beach, about 30 minutes without traffic.
- Sherman Oaks Galleria, a short drive away, and the cafés on Ventura Blvd, a walk down the hill.

Which area in LA is best for families?
There isn't one answer. Santa Monica suits beach-first trips, Anaheim suits Disneyland-only trips, and Hollywood is central but busy. For a trip built around Universal Studios Hollywood and the studio tours, with room for a group, the San Fernando Valley (Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Burbank) is a practical base: quieter streets, more houses with pools and parking, and Universal about 10 minutes from Vista Villa.
Where can you take a 5-year-old in LA?
